Having problems with leads? Don’t feel alone. Funders and lead providers say response rates to offline marketing have been cut in half while the price of pay-per-click campaigns has skyrocketed. They blame intense competition in an increasingly crowded field of funders, market saturation by lead generation companies, better email spam filters and comparison shopping by small-business owners who are becoming more savvy about how much they need to pay for merchant cash advances and loans.
Clicks that cost $5 each seven years ago now command a price of nearly $125, says Isaac Stern, CEO of Yellowstone Capital LLC, Green Capital and Fundry. “Pay-per-click marketing has gotten out of control,” he laments. “So you need a hefty, hefty budget to compete in that world.” He reports spending $600,000 to $700,000 a month on internet marketing, compared to $100,000 monthly on direct mail.
Even when the price of individual clicks isn’t measured in hundreds of dollars, the cost of the multiple clicks required to create a lead can mount up, according to Michael O’Hare, CEO of Blindbid, a Colorado Springs, Colo.- based provider of leads. If it takes 15 clicks that cost $25 each to obtain a lead, that comes to $375, he notes. Still, some companies manage to use key words that cost $8 or so per click to get decent leads for less than $100, he says.
While the cost of pay per click is exploding, the response to direct mail marketing is declining precipitously, says Bob Squiers, who owns the Deerfield, Fla.-based Meridian Leads. The percentage of small-business owners who respond to advertising they receive in the mail has fallen from 2 percent just a few years ago to 1 percent now, partly because they receive so many mailings from so many more lead-generation companies, he says. “There weren’t too many people doing direct mail into this space five years ago,” he notes. His company’s leads range in price from pennies to $60, he says.
While Blindbid and Meridian both specialize in finding leads by sending out direct mail pieces and then qualifying the respondents in phone conversations, one of their competitors, Lenders Marketing, takes a different approach, according to Justin Benton, sales director for the Camarillo, Calif.-based company. Benton’s data-driven method combines his company’s databases with the databases of financial institutions. He cultivates relationships with the banking industry’s executives to facilitate that process, he says, and his company does not make phone calls to qualify leads.
But placing too high a value on data gives rise to two problems, the way O’Hare views the search for leads. First, analyzing the data creates plenty of challenges, he says. Second, human beings just aren’t rational enough in their decision-making to fit data-driven profiles or cohorts, he maintains. “The holy grail is to find some algorithm that will predict that a merchant needs funding, and they can then find these people through massive data,” he says with skepticism.
Whatever path a company takes to finding and verifying leads, it pays to establish three elements before classifying them, O’Hare says. First, prospects should qualify financially for credit or advances. Second, prospects should demonstrate a genuine interest in obtaining funding, as opposed to less-than-serious “tire kicking.” With both of those characteristics in place, O’Hare informs prospects they can expect to hear from funders.
Blindbid also wants to guide the expectations of the funders who are calling the leads, O’Hare says. To that end, the vendor invites funders to listen to recordings of the phone calls it makes to qualify leads. Just the same, funders should bear in mind that they may not receive the same reception when they contact the lead, he cautions. “We see it all the time, he says. “We speak to the merchant in the morning and they’re pleasant. Then in the afternoon when they speak to the funder or the broker, the merchant is grumpy.”
Retailers’ mood swings aside, funders can soon gauge the quality of the leads they’re buying. “You can’t judge a lead on cost, Squiers admonishes. “Judge them by performance.” However, performance fluctuates according to the funder’s sales skills, product offering and product knowledge, he maintains.
Meanwhile, the problems plaguing the lead business should prompt funders to become creative in their approach to finding prospects. That’s why even vendors who make their living selling leads encourage funders to search for prospects on their own. “We always advise generating your own leads,” says Benton. “The only leads you can truly count on are the ones you generate yourself.”
Knowing where to look for leads can require a thorough grasp of what’s happening in a particular market. “You can look at what industries are hot,” O’hare suggests. The trucking business is heating up, for example, because so many truckers need funding to buy expensive equipment to meet new requirements for electronic logs, he says. Meanwhile, the recession has wracked the martial arts industry, so dojos might require funding for marketing to help them recover, he notes.
Understanding every industry in that much detail isn’t practical, so lead generation companies urge funders to specialize in just a few niches. Building a network of customers who know each other can result in referrals, Benton observes. It also soothes skeptical prospects, he notes. “Once you say I’ve worked with Fred down at Tony Roma’s – they can feel more comfortable, especially if you’ve done it in the same city,” he maintains.
Whether leads arise internally or come from a vendor, funders have to work them properly to succeed in closing deals, lead-generating companies agree. “The real key is being consistent and persistent,” Benton says. “Research has shown the average lead is called 1.3 times, so once you make that second call you are ahead of the curve.” He advocates that funders use their CRM system by taking copious notes on their calls, setting up nurture campaigns and following up with leads in an organized manner.
And don’t forget that at least some prospects are getting pummeled with calls. “A lot of brokers are carpet bombing – they’re on the phone all day,” says O’Hare. “I talked to one guy who said he makes 400 or 500 calls a day on a manual dial. I’d like to do a video of that.
Hungry for Data? Avant Acqui-hires Two Startups to Expand Tech Team

What are the three vectors for the lending industry today? You’d be wrong if you said anything other than data, data, and more data.
And lending companies are on an acquisition spree to collect, analyze and work data to help them find and lend more to new borrowers. Although, acqui-hires or buying a company for a team is not new in the startup circles, it is still a nascent trend among marketplace lending companies that are still carving out territories in the $12 trillion lending marketplace.
Three year old consumer lender Avant acquired two local technology startups, StudyCloud and TempoIQ for data scientists and engineers to build its technology team. StudyCloud is an edtech startup based in Chicago and develops tools for interactive learning. TempoIQ is another Chicago-based startup which provides platforms for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications and data analytics.
For Avant, this is the second wave of acqui-hires. In March 2015, the company acquired the straggling, online debt management startup ReadyForZero, a tool which let users manage personal debt and credit online. Avant bought ReadyForZero’s technology platform at a time when the company was in a talent crunch, struggling to scale.
“Acqui-hire transactions are a significant win-win for everyone involved. The acqui-hire trend affords members of the startup community to take a chance on their own vision as well as explore new opportunities across various industries,” said Al Goldstein, CEO of Avant in a news release.
As online lenders like Avant bring Silicon Valley and Wall Street closer by using machine learning and big data to develop propriety credit models to identify and lend to new borrowers, acquiring startups to build this technology has become commonplace.
“Acquisitions and acqui-hires are just another sign of how rapidly this industry is evolving. It recognizes the need to bring in highly skilled talent quickly,” said Glenn Goldman, CEO of Credibly.
Last month, (March 14) Square acquired analytics startup Framed Data, again for its team of data scientists to target customers better for Square Capital. The company mined data using machine learning to predict user behavior and purchasing decisions and will bolster Square’s small business lending.
The changing face of the lending industry is evident with the rise in companies lending to tech savvy millennial borrowers, enriching user experience and tailoring loan products to suit specific needs and really, using data to discover more customers.
“At first glance, it looks like Avant is looking to create a dynamic user experience and targeted at nurturing customers before, during or after borrowing decisions are made, beyond just delivering loan at a given point in time,” said Goldman.
Nine Organizations Submit Joint Response to Bizarre Illinois Small Business Lending Bill

A bill introduced in the Illinois State Senate to “protect” small businesses from lenders is causing small businesses themselves to scratch their heads. The bill would effectively outlaw nonbank business lending, which would render those declined by a bank, restricted from accessing capital through other means.
“As we all recall what happened in 2007-2008 in the housing market, so many people went under due to these predatory lending practices. So I’m happy we’re being proactive instead of reactive with this issue,” said Illinois State Senator Emil Jones.
That proactive approach is to scorch the earth, which is creating staunch pushback from within the small business community. A letter co-signed by the following nine organizations was submitted last week to Jacqueline Collins, the Senator who introduced the bill:

We all share your goal of helping small businesses. However, we believe that the prescriptive underwriting standards, complex regulatory mandates, and expansion of civil and criminal liability will prevent small businesses from getting the capital they need to grow and benefit their communities and the state of Illinois.
We respectfully ask the Committee to study the issue of access to capital for small business in Illinois through a transparent process that involves the direct input from small businesses prior to moving forward with SB 2865.
We are hopeful that a deliberative, inclusive, and public process could produce a report that will assist your Committee and the Illinois legislature. Among the questions a study committee could try and answer are: what methods of transparency and disclosure by alternative lenders and finance companies would make it easier for responsible small business borrowing; should non-profit lenders be exempt from alternative lending and finance requirements; and how does the securitization and sale of alternative loans benefit small business lending?
Of course, there are many additional issues that small business stakeholders will identify through a study committee in an effort to assist your Committee prior to any legislative action on SB 2865. We stand ready to assist you in that effort and we appreciate the consideration of our views.
Conflicting information has come out of the Senate since a hearing was held about it on the morning of April 12th. Fox reports that it is heading to the Senate floor for discussion with the expectation of some modifications, while those that were there say that it has been put on hold until early 2017 since it’s a presidential election year.
California DBO Releases Report on Alternative Lenders

The results of a survey that the California Department of Oversight issued late last year to 14 alternative lenders are in. Affirm, Avant, Bond Street, CAN Capital, Fundbox, Funding Circle, Kabbage, LendingClub, OnDeck, PayPal, Prosper, SoFi and Square all responded. CircleBack Lending declined to take it.
The DBO requested data on term loans, lines of credit, merchant cash advances, factoring transactions and other products.
Other than determining that billions of dollars are being deployed from these companies, they found that median consumer loan APRs ranged between 5.37% APR and 35.94% APR. For businesses, the median APR ranged from 18.56% APR to 51.40% APR.
The number of delinquent (30 days or more past due) consumer financing dollars as a share of total dollars outstanding ranged from .99% to 20.30%
The number of delinquent business financing dollars as a share of total dollars outstanding ranged from .55% to 6.79%.
Business Loan Brokers Encounter Hard Times

Feeling a little bearish about the business lending industry lately? If you’re a business loan broker, you’re not alone.
Marketing costs are going up while the response rates of marketing are generally going down. It’s a trend that’s lightly covered in the March/April issue of our magazine that has just been dropped in the mail. But there’s more to it. Several recent new broker shops have failed or are failing within just their first few months of operation. Employers have become more litigious with former employees, alleging violations of non-competes and/or non-solicit agreements, and at least one sales agent apparently went too far and was arrested in early February for backdooring deals.
The number of emails AltFinanceDaily has received about stolen commissions, rogue employees and general grievances has shot up in recent months, and on one industry forum, sales agents are now publicly voicing their frustrations. One thread that was aptly titled, Merchant cash advance crushed me, was posted by a discouraged broker. “I’ve been in this business for a year and I can say this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done from a business perspective,” he said. One user responded by saying, “fail rate is very high. Competition is crazy. If you can’t spend money on marketing, including a sizable outbound sales force, you are a dead duck.”
“The market has changed,” said Fundzio CEO Eddie Siegel to AltFinanceDaily in the previous issue. “The cost of capital has gotten a lot lower for the customer, and since there are more brokers in the marketplace they are willing to take a lesser amount just to get the deal to the finish line.”

In an environment of more calls, lower response rates and lower commissions, it’s no surprise that outrage over backdoored deals has overshadowed stacking as the industry’s most pressing issue.
Even funders have stepped up their legal pursuit of other funders through allegations of tortious interference. Whether such cases have merit is for the courts to decide, but they are a sign of the times that money is no longer raining from the sky. Lines are being drawn. In a market where everyone was once a winner, now there must be losers.
Even the political atmosphere is changing. In just the last few months, the Small Business Finance Association has hired an executive director and two additional new advocacy groups were formed, the Commercial Finance Coalition and the Coalition for Responsible Business Finance.
“A few years ago, individual brokers could be making $20,000 or even $40,000 a month. Now those numbers are much more difficult to reach unless brokers have a unique lead generation method or their own money to participate in the deals,” said Zachary Ramirez, a vice president at World Business Lenders.
Of course, it’s not bad for everyone. In February, AltFinanceDaily featured a sales closer whose team collectively originated $47 million in deals last year. He’s not alone. Veteran players, particularly those that have been in the industry for nearly a decade acknowledge that they have first mover advantage over the newer entrants because their portfolios are so big or they have weathered the bumps and don’t get as frustrated by them.
Funders that know the pains brokers are going through are attempting to address it in their marketing, with some assuring their prospective partners that they have no inside sales force, and thus no way to steal a deal. For those with inside sales forces, they are relying on their well established reputations to do the talking.
Anonymous deal soliciting has been mostly outlawed on industry forums to curtail bad experiences, but they still happen on other mediums. One broker complained on LinkedIn this week that a lead generator based in the Philippines had allegedly pocketed his $2,500 upfront fee and then changed their phone number and disappeared. That lead generator is still advertising his wares through social media.
If that’s not a sign of the times, then I don’t know what is.
Not All Marketplace Lenders Are Created Equal – The State of Fintech Lending

It’s kind of a problematic term, said CommonBond CEO David Klein about “marketplace lending.” Klein was one of four industry experts on the State of Fintech Lending panel hosted at their office on Tuesday morning. “Not all marketplace lenders are created equal,” he said. There are different asset classes, different credit spectrums and even different investor responses, he explained.
CommonBond for example, focuses on student lending and more specifically, the very upper end of the credit spectrum. As proof, Klein said the company has not even experienced a 30-day delinquency or default. Compare that asset with some of the products offered by Fundera, which range from merchant cash advances to SBA loans and it’s easy to see why marketplace lending as a category can be overly broad. Fundera CEO Jared Hecht was another panelist alongside PeerIQ CEO Ram Ahluwalia and Macquarie Group Managing Director Brian Foley. WSJ reporter Telis Demos served as the moderator.
Klein’s company deals with institutional investors, which loosely qualifies it as a marketplace in the sense that there are buyers for their loans. Hecht’s company is a marketplace too but for small business owners seeking loans. Fundera is not a lender. “We don’t have to run around and deal with the capital markets,” Hecht said.
Despite the incredible diversity of asset and credit classes, PeerIQ’s Ahluwalia described the quality of the securitizations taking place throughout the industry as very good. “This is going to be a very different movie than The Big Short,” he said. As of the end of 2015, PeerIQ ranked total cumulative securitizations at $8.4 Billion, with 41 deals issued to date (25 Consumer, 9 Student, and 7 Small Business).
Pension funds and insurance funds who are attracted to this space are focused on AAA rated bonds, said Macquarie’s Foley. “They want scale, performance and track record,” he said, adding that they’re happy to trade away return for a reduction of risk so that they can sleep at night.
There’s over 200 marketplace lenders in the US, Klein stated. Only 12 or 13 have reached a certain level of scale though, he added. “2016 will be the year that marketplace lenders go from the mainstream to maturity,” he said.
Perhaps as part of that, however, the marketplace lending term will have to mature with it. “Each category is very different,” said Klein.
